Security and Treatment of Inmates with Mental Retardation and Associated Mental Disorders in Ig Prison

Purpose:

The purpose of the article is to present the conditions, measures and issues in Ig Prison regarding the accommodation and treatment of criminal offenders with intellectual developmental disorder and associated mental health disorders, coming from secured ward of social care home.

Design/Methods/Approach:

The article combines the descriptive method and the authors' practical experience gained from working with people with intellectual developmental disorder and associated mental health disorders in Ig Prison.

Findings:

It has been shown that persons with intellectual developmental disorder and associated mental health disorders are unable to integrate into everyday life in prison. They need guidance and help from employees and other incarcerated persons with following the rules and basic self-care. They exhibit unpredictable and uncontrollable behaviour that can pose a danger to their lives and is not possible to prevent. Their special needs exceed the spatial, personnel and professional resources of the Ig prison. Due to inadequate conditions, their basic rights and dignity are being violated.

Practical Implications:

The article provides a description of the actual conditions in Ig Prison and the problems that arise in the treatment of persons with intellectual developmental disorder and associated mental health disorders. It offers a practical insight into the situation for other professionals, especially those participating in criminal proceedings (judges, court experts, prosecutors, lawyers, etc.).

Originality/Value:

The article describes a new situation that has been encountered in the Ig Prison for the past few years and has not yet been presented to professional public. The presented issue represents a starting point for further discussion and search for legal and professional solutions.
