PhD Program in Criminal Justice and Security

The Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security also offers a three-year post-graduate doctoral programme, Criminal Justice and Security. In the first year, the candidates deepen their knowledge of four compulsory subjects; in the second year, they choose one of the following elective modules:

  1. Police Activity and Criminal Investigation
  2. Criminology
  3. Business Processes Security
  4. Security Risk/Threat Management
  5. Information Security

In the third year, they focus on their master’s seminar paper and a doctoral thesis. Upon completion, the candidates are awarded a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice and Security. This Ph.D. programme is focused on the acquisition of in-depth knowledge
in different areas of expertise and on the development of skills required for identifying and developing new sources of knowledge in the profession and science, including adequate application of scientific research methods across a wide variety of problems in new or modified circumstances, not to mention assuming responsibility for managing the most complex work systems. General competences spring from their universal fundamental knowledge of the subject or the programme. During the study process, not only their knowledge develops towards building these competences, so does their attitude towards its practical application.

Second- and third-degree study programmes focus on the development of analytical skills for solving most complex professional problems, as well as on deepening and dissemination of new knowledge in very specific fields of expertise, introducing the candidates to the most complex problem-oriented application of their knowledge and skills.

Graduates of the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security can seek their job opportunities in state bodies, private-owned companies (police, private-owned security companies, intelligence services, detective agencies, etc.), the Ministry of Defence (military police), the Ministry of Justice (Prison Administration of the RS) and companies (provision of safety and security, preventing business and industrial espionage, etc.), not to mention new job opportunities related to safety and security issues in local communities (city warden services). According the latest development trends in Europe, we can soon expect emergence of new professions, such as security manager in local communities, B.A. of information security, and others). »This Ph. D. Programme is also offered at the EMUNI in 2009/10.«
