The Vision

The Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security addresses the challenges of providing Slovenian society with a comprehensive criminal justice education system, not only because of the rapid development of this sector and the area of study, but also because of the fact that Slovenia is a member of the European Union, where the principle of the free movement of people, capital, goods and services prevails. As a result, Slovenia requires a university-level research and study institution in the field of criminal justice and security studies, internationally acknowledged and taking part in developing knowledge, which constitutes a base of developing and offering internationally comparable undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Originally founded as the Department for Internal Affairs at the then University College of Administration, it underwent several evolution stages, from the University College of Internal Affairs and the College of Police and Security Studies to the Faculty of Police and Security Studies to be finally renamed, in 2006, as the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security, when it offered its users, for the first time in its history, a full range of new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in security studies. The future efforts of the Faculty will be aimed at further increasing the quality of the existing programmes while preparing new undergraduate and postgraduate curricula to respond to the new security issues that modern society is evermore forced to address. To this end, one of the Faculty's present challenges is to establish an information security study programme incorporating the knowledge, methods and techniques developed within the social and natural sciences.

With these developments, the Faculty has been improving conditions for the exchange of professors and students within the European Union and beyond. One of its main future tasks is to continue and further strengthen existing foreign exchange programmes; while striving to provide as many students we can with an opportunity to spend at least one semester studying abroad, we also want to welcome an increasing number of foreign students. Another important area of international cooperation is that of university teacher exchange programme support that will assist our teaching staff in their professional development efforts, while giving lecturers from abroad a chance to take part in our education programmes, and our home-based students to experience a study atmosphere enriched with an international dimension.

One of the goals is to qualify Faculty graduates to legally, professionally, ethically and efficiently apply their expertise to ensuring the internal security of the state and its citizens. This will be the Faculty’s contribution to safeguarding a democratic society, and human rights and freedoms.

Research work at the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security is becoming as important as its educational counterpart. The need to focus on research and make the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security take a more active part in national and international research projects calls for a strengthening of the faculty staff and the reorganisation of research activities. The first step in this direction has been the establishment of the Institute of Criminal Justice and Security Research, whose tasks and duties are not limited to research, as they strongly reflect its consultative role in terms of internal affairs safety aspects of the work performed by state entities, economic enterprises and private organisations. To support the above-mentioned new educational programmes, an Information Security and Computer Forensics Institute is to be established. Therefore, it goes without saying that one of the high priority tasks awaiting the Faculty in ensuring the top-level performance of the Institute of Criminal Justice and Security Research and the institute carrying out research in the area of information security is to attract high-quality research staff, to involve the teaching staff in the research process, and to foster professional development of both.
